Sea Otter Research and Conservation (SORAC)

During my undergraduate at UCSC, I spent a summer volunteering with USGS, CDFW, and UCSC researchers studying sea otter populations in Big Sur.

Years later, I was keen to hop on to a new project launching in Moss Landing to study otters in the Elkhorn Slough. The Monterey Bay Aquarium's SORAC Team lead that effort.

I came on in the first days, and continued to work with them over the next 2 years. We captured and tagged dozens of sea otters in the wild, and then tracked and monitored them daily to study distribution, diet, reproduction, and ecology. We also responded to stranding calls, transferred deceased otters to the Aquarium for necropsies, and helped to educate the public about how to keep otters safe. The results of this multi-year study are currently being analyzed and synthesized for publication.
